Freedom Bridge Foundation is a 501(c)(3) (EIN 41-2985665) nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering refugees, including North Korean refugees, through education, mentorship, and opportunity-building experiences that support long-term stability and leadership development.

Our goal is not simply to help people survive difficult circumstances, but to give them opportunities, connections, and resources that can help them build meaningful and independent futures.

Why was Freedom Bridge Foundation created?

Freedom Bridge Foundation was created to help bridge the gap between escaping hardship and building a new life.

For many refugees, reaching freedom is only the beginning. They may still face language barriers, cultural differences, stigma, displacement, limited professional networks, educational challenges, and uncertainty about their future.

We want to help refugees move beyond survival and begin building lives filled with opportunity, purpose, and leadership.

Our current work primarily focuses on education, mentorship, leadership development, and opportunity-building for refugees who are rebuilding their lives.

There are other organizations that specialize specifically in rescue operations, refugee routes, humanitarian assistance, and resettlement. When appropriate, we may help connect individuals with organizations better equipped to provide those specialized services.

Why do North Koreans leave North Korea?

Every person’s story is different.

North Koreans may leave because of hunger, economic hardship, political repression, lack of personal freedom, family circumstances, or the desire for a different future.

Leaving North Korea can be extremely dangerous, and the journey does not necessarily end once someone crosses the border.

Is it illegal for North Koreans to leave the country without permission?

North Korea severely restricts the ability of ordinary citizens to travel internationally. Leaving the country without government authorization can place individuals and their families at significant risk.

This is one reason many North Korean refugees face dangerous and complicated journeys before reaching a country where they can safely resettle.

Where do North Korean refugees usually go after leaving North Korea?

Many North Koreans initially cross into China because of its geographic proximity.

From there, some attempt to travel through other countries before eventually reaching South Korea or another country where they can legally resettle.

Every journey is different, and these routes can involve significant danger and uncertainty.

What challenges do North Korean refugees face after reaching freedom?

Reaching a free country can be life-changing, but it does not eliminate every challenge.

North Korean refugees may need to adjust to unfamiliar technology, education systems, workplaces, financial systems, language differences, and new social expectations. Some also arrive without strong professional or personal networks.

Can North Korean refugees live in South Korea?
